9 new BC beers released this week

BC’s breweries are packing a lot of flavour in these new beers

Good morning!

A big welcome to our new subscribers! You’re part of a growing community of craft beer lovers and we’re delighted to keep you in the know on the latest beer releases, events, and beer news in BC.

While we may be inching closer to the end of summer, we can thank BC’s breweries for keeping the summer vibes going for some time to come. This week our amazing craft brewers have indulged us with fruit and tropical-forward beers that are best enjoyed on a sunny patio.

Today we’ve got nine new BC beers, we learn how Cold IPAs are brewed, and share some brewery/bike-related deals. Plus we found a portrait of the perfect pub (in the UK).

NEW BEER RELEASE

Iced Tea

This limited release from BREWHALL caught our eye on the weekend. Brewed with black tea from Silk Road Company, Plunge was conditioned on fresh lemon zest 🍋 for a refreshing patio beer. This isn’t your grandmother’s iced tea. And it’s not your grandpa’s lawnmower beer.

  • Available: On tap and in limited quantities to go

  • Location: 97 E 2nd Ave, Vancouver | Map

Strawberry Shortcake Sour

BC breweries continue to put out summer-themed releases and this one might be a first. Beacon Brewing’s Strawberry Shortcake Sour was designed to be one part decedent and one part deceptively light, at only 4.9% ABV. 🍓🍰.

It promises “loads of strawberry on the nose, with the first taste showcasing the large addition of milk sugar and strawberry puree, but quickly transforming to an effervescent experience.”

  • Available: In the tasting room and for off sales

  • Location: 9829 Third St, Sidney | Map

Key Lime and Coconut

If strawberries aren’t your thing, this one might catch your eye. Shaketown Brewing released Keylime Wishes and Coconut Dreams over the weekend, brewed with key lime juice, real coconut, and Kveik yeast.

It promises aromas of “coconut cream, lime, citrus, and subtle pineapple. When it hits your lips, you are immediately transported to a yacht in the Florida Keys, the wind blowing in your hair with Steely Dan playing whimsically in the background.” 🥥

  • Available: On tap at the brewery, and in cans to go.

  • Location: 288 Esplanade E #105, North Vancouver | Map

Strawberry and Basil

We previewed this beer on Friday before details were released, and now we have those details. Old Yale Brewing teamed up with the BC Strawberry Growers Association to add hand-picked, field-ripened BC strawberries to this wheat ale.

You can expect a juicy, vibrant, fruit-forward beer with a “subtle herbal earthiness from fresh basil.”

  • Available: in 4-packs at the brewery, online, local delivery, or select local private liquor stores

  • Location: 44550 S Sumas Rd #404, Chilliwack | Map

LEARN SOMETHING NEW

What is a Cold IPA?

With a Cold IPA making this week’s lineup of new releases, we thought it would be appropriate to explore this style further.

As the name suggests, a Cold IPA is an IPA that has been fermented at a lower temperature than what an IPA would normally ferment at. To make this work, brewers usually rely on a lager yeast instead of an ale yeast to get a clean fermentation profile.

By changing the yeast strain and the fermentation temperature, you end up with an IPA that is super crispy and crushable like a lager, with some of the stronger hop flavours you’d expect from an IPA. Really, it’s the perfect summer beer.

  • Did you know? Cold IPA is a relatively new style, invented by Wayfinder in Portland. The Beer Loop recently enjoyed the original Cold IPA and loved it.

  • Listen to this podcast from Craft Beer and Brewing, which goes deep with Kevin Davey of Wayfinder on what it takes to make this beer.

  • Where to get one? Container Brewing’s Frostbite, Phillips’ Revenge and Fernie’s Vantage are all examples of Cold IPAs you can get in BC.

JOB BOARD

BEER ART

Peaches and Mountains

We love how a fresh take and this beer art has us looking at things differently.

Beer photographer R.J. had a realization when carving up a peach, noticing a similarity between the peaks and valleys of the peach pit area to that of a mountain range. That inspired him to design this new landscape with Driftwood’s Broadwing Peach Sour.🍑 Here’s how he did it.
