Have you ever seen an exploding fermentor?

Dry hopping can be dangerous. Plus 19 beers to enjoy this week.

Happy Friday!

Local sumac? Yes, that's in a new beer release. We also have actual footage of exploding beer, a not-so-sober reminder of the risks associated with dry hopping.

As I write today's newsletter from the UK, it might be fitting that I came across an article from a local blog that wonders whether pub food here is on the decline. I'm hoping the authors are wrong! Scroll down for the article.

FEATURED NEW BEER RELEASES

Half-Dark Lager

Hoyne Brewing has released a half-dark lager with a great story. Svec pays homage to Jaroslav Foul, a young entrepreneur who was forced from his home in Czechoslovakia in 1948, feeling for his survival from Communism. He would land in Montreal and began a long journey to a successful life. Two generations later, his grandson, Antoine Foul, is now Hoyne's Head Brewer.

  • Available: In cans at the brewery

  • Location: 101-2740 Bridge St, Victoria | Map

Sumac-Infused Sour

This might be a first for BC's craft beer scene. Beere Brewing's Set and Setting is a blackberry mango lemonade sour made with Staghorn sumac. This sumac is a local tree that produces foral and lemony berries. An exciting twist on a terroir beer!

  • Available: at the brewery

  • Location: 312 Esplanade E, North Vancouver | Map

Oak Aged Golden Sour

This Golden Sour from House of Funk Brewing was hopped with lavender and cascade hops, giving us aromatic florals, earthy white pepper and rustic hop notes. The brewery promises a "bracingly acidic and complex" blend of barrel-aged saisons aged 28-30 months.

  • Available: at the brewery and select liquor stores around the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island.

  • Location: 350 Esplanade E #101, North Vancouver | Map
