Dageraad's marketing lead curates his favourite BC beers

Good morning!

Today we have the latest in our monthly Mix-Pack Series, a series that will be available to our premium members after January 31. We hope you enjoy this free preview.

In this series, we ask a professional in BC's craft beer scene to walk us through their perfect 4-pack of BC beer.

For this edition, we asked Braden Yamamoto of Dageraad Brewing to share his mix-pack and it covers a wide spectrum of flavours. It's the perfect explorer pack and we hope you get a chance to assemble this mix-pack and fully enjoy it.

1. Brassneck Brewing - Passive Aggressive

Why this beer: Passive Aggressive is one of my all-times. It teases you with a big hop aroma but it mellows out quickly on the palate leaving you with a really enjoyable and refreshing pale. It’s almost always kicking around my fridge.

When to enjoy it: This is a beer that I reach for pretty much whenever it’s on tap somewhere. If pressed, I’d say it’s the ideal beer to catch up with old friends - speaking from experience.

A great memory: Passive Aggressive is the first Vancouver beer I had when I moved here from Calgary and finished unloading the moving truck. One of them anyways - that night in the Brassneck Tasting room got a little away from us, as I (hazily) recall.

Tasting Notes from the Brewery:

A bright Pale Ale with a strong hop backbone. The ever so slightly sweet malt character plays second fiddle to the punchy hops. Somewhere between a pale  and an IPA, Passive Aggressive has become our flagship.

2. Strange Fellows - Nocturnum

Why this beer: I love a punch of hops and I love nice toasty malts, so it feels like the folks at Strange Fellows brew Nocturnum specifically for me. The hops are assertive without being overbearing and the smooth malts make a comforting backbone.

When to enjoy it: If ever there was a perfect shoulder-season beer, this would be it. It gives you the big malty notes you want when it’s cold out, but with vibrant hop aromas to remind you that winter always ends eventually.

A great memory: I first had Nocturnum in a Gastown pub with a good friend on a rare day we both had off. Our first glasses turned into a pitcher, and a cold winter afternoon turned into a warm day spent with solid company.

Tasting Notes from the Brewery

Chocolate brown colour with citrus, malty, and biscuity aromas. A robust, round, and hop-malt character that pairs well with red meat, rich and creamy cheese, and sweet desserts.

3. Steel & Oak - Simple Things

Why this beer: Look - it’s an easy-drinking, well-made, unfussy pilsner. It’s right there in the name; what more do you want? It’s clean with a nice biscuit note to it and a subtle sweetness.

When to enjoy it: If the sun is high, the temperature is climbing, and the music is good (and loud), that’s when Simple Things really brings the magic.

A great memorySimple Things makes an appearance at most industry events and I’m always thankful to see these white cans pop up around a tent even if it’s just for a break from all the other big hop bombs.

Tasting Notes from the Brewery

Pouring gold with a fluffy white head this assertive German Pilsner is made with Weyermann Barke Pilsner malt and a selection of Noble hops. Crisp, clean, with notes of honey, graham cracker, biscuit, and a refreshing and lengthy bitterness, Simple Things is made the way a beer should be... with water, malt, hops, yeast, and time

Steel & Oak

4. Dageraad - Blonde

Why this beer: This one - this one right here? This is why beer was invented. It’s not a crusher; at 7.5%, Blonde is made for a good time and a long time. The spice and floral aroma is enchanting and the bright wave of noble hops and stone fruit it kicks off are going to hook you, no problem.

When to enjoy it: Our Blonde belongs at the dinner table right next to any glass of wine. It’s a gorgeous beer with bright, refined flavours. Pair it with bolder dishes like BBQ or anything with a bit of heat and you’ll have no doubt that beer is as deserving of fine dining tables as some of the finest wines

A great memory: I remember having a glass of Blonde the day I started at Dageraad. I’d had it before, but getting at it fresh from the source was revelatory. If you haven’t come out for a visit, you’re doing yourself a disservice.

Tasting Notes from the Brewery

Crowned with a fluffy, white head and graced with a fruity, spicy, citrusy aroma, Dageraad Blonde is the pride of our brewery. A closer inspection reveals a note of nutty pilsner malt, whiff of noble hops, faint note of caramelized sugar and—when the beer warms—a sweet, floral breath of alcohol. And all that before you’ve tasted it. This beer was inspired by Belgium’s incredible variety of strong, blonde ales, ranging from semi-sweet to bone-dry, that offer a huge range of fruit, hop and spice flavours. Dageraad Blonde gets its depth and complexity of flavour from European hops, spices and our house yeast
