The Mix-Pack: Brandon Schultz' curated 4-pack of BC Beers

Persephone's brewer curates his favourite BC beers

Good morning!

Today we have the latest in our monthly Mix-Pack Series, in which we ask a professional in BC's craft beer scene to walk us through their perfect 4-pack of BC beer.

For this edition, we asked Persephone Brewing's Brandon Schultz to share his mix-pack, and it's got a little but of everything.

If you want your favourite 4-pack of BC beer featured in the newsletter, hit us up with a reply.

We hope you enjoy reading this as much as we did.

Brandon Schultz's Mix-Pack

  • Your Curator: Brandon Schultz

  • Official Title: Brewer

  • Brewery: Persephone Brewing

Brandon started working at Persephone in August 2016, pursuing his passion for craft beer. When attending the Summer Cask Festival of 2015 at Central City brew pub he met Anders (now his boss) and Matt, one of Persephone's former brewers. They spotted him in wearing the only Persephone shirt in the crowd, which Brandon credits for landing a job at the brewery. Since then he has worked his way up from packaging to brewing, which he has been doing for nearly four years.

1. Superflux Brewing - Happiness

Why this beer: If there was a beer I'd order every time I saw it on a menu it's this one, It blew my mind the first time I had it and still does today, it’s such a dang good IPA.

When to enjoy it: I enjoy this beer best after work, so I can truly enjoy and savour it.

A great memory: I remember bringing a can of it to work to share with the brew crew on a Friday and all of them just loving it asking if I brought more haha.

Tasting Notes from Superflux: "Colourful notes of tropical fruit, pine sap and a medium body of slightly sweet malt." - Superflux

2. Wildeye Brewing - Czech Pilsner

Why this beer: As a brewer all you want is good pilsner and this one crushes, wish I had one now!

When to enjoy it: This beer for me is a great example of the style its beautiful. It also won 1st at the BC Beer Awards this year—need I say more?

A great memory: The first time I got to visit Wildeye I remember wanting a nice tall glass of the pilsner from the source, and wow was it amazing, not to mention all the good food they have as well!

Tasting Notes from Wildeye: "Citrus hop notes on the nose, with a buttery cracker body to balance a grassy and citrus hop flavour. Finishes with a classic Czech Pilsner bitterness" - Collective Craft Beer

3. Driftwood Brewing - Fat Tug

Why this beer: This beer is what got me into craft beer, it was hoppy, bitter and in your face. I loved it. I almost always have some in my fridge.

When to enjoy it: I think anytime is a good time to enjoy a Tug, it's the perfect go-to.

A great memory: My favourite memory is having it for the first time with my Dad and playing crib, always enjoy a pint of Fat Tug with the old man.

Tasting notes from Driftwood: Brewed with the hop aficionado in mind, Fat Tug is a Northwest-style India Pale Ale with an intense hop profile featuring notes of grapefruit, mango, melon and passionfruit. Sufficient malt is there to provide support. At 7% alc/vol and 80+ IBUs this beer delivers on the promise to satisfy anyone with a thirst for all things hoppy!

4. Persephone - Goddess Golden Ale

Why this beer: The Beer Loop wants one from my brewery so this is mine! Our golden ale is crisp, clean with just enough hops and bitterness to keep you sipping and wanting more. It also pairs amazing with pizza—highly recommend!

When to enjoy it: Best time to enjoy this beer for me is sitting by a fire or inside playing boardgames.

A great memory: Think my best memory for this beer is the first time I tried a batch after having brewed it myself. It hits different when you drink a beer you've brewed yourself, especially your first one on a big system! I'll always cherish this beer and getting to brew it for others.

Tasting Notes from Persephone Brewing: "Crisp, dry and refreshing, backed with an assertive bitterness" - Persephone
