Strathcona's Beer Week and the Truck Stop Concert Series

What to drink and do this weekend

Happy Friday!

Geoff and I beefed up this weekend's primer with some new sections and features, so please hit us up with a reply to let us know what you liked.

We have a Dortmunder as our recommended weekend drink, a feature on a brewery we quite like, this weekend's beer events, featured art, and some long reads for you to dig into.

Enjoy, and have an awesome weekend!

What to drink this weekend

Bomber Brewing Dortmunder

This light and super clear Dortmunder from Bomber Brewing strikes a good balance between malt and hops with a touch of malty sweetness balanced through the finish with a slight hop bitterness in the aftertaste. Dortmunders are not easy to find in BC and this version is a very good interpretation of the style. It's the kind of beer you can enjoy on any occasion and seems like the right call on a sunny day as much as it does on the rainiest of days.

  • Where to get it: On tap or in tall-cans at the brewery and online.

  • Location: 1488 Adanac St, Vancouver | Map

Where to go

Featured Brewery: Container Brewing

With this week being the first ever Strathcona Beer Week, featuring a variety of brewers (Luppolo Brewing, Hastings Mills Brewing, Superflux Beer Co., Settlement Brewing, and Strathcona Beer Co.), we recommend a visit to the area, and especially, a visit to Container Brewing.

  • Reason to visit the taproom: It's gorgeous with bright colours, lots of wood, natural light, and a water station to keep you hydrated. The lounge on second floor invites long conversations with its relaxed vibes.

  • The beer: Container Brewing makes incredibly good beer with each new brew showcasing a twist on a style. It's the kind of place to enjoy an adventure in beer, knowing that everything you try will be delicious.

  • What to try: Container has a number of new releases out this week, including an Imperial (7%) Pilsner that sounds intriguing, but we love Cloud Theory—a hazy IPA on nitro. It pours beautifully with a super pillowy mouthfeel and wonderful hop flavours without the hop burn of many hazies. It's incredibly drinkable.

  • Resident Food Truck: Burdy is the brewery's resident food truck, offering delicious chicken/eggplant parmesan sandwiches, beer-battered fries, ceasar salad and a tiramisu made with stout.

  • Patio seating. While we love the taproom and upstairs lounge, if you're looking for a patio, Container has a large but intimate patio seating area— a destination brewery nestled within the city.

Featured Art

Cyclehops from Strange Fellows Brewing

Strange Fellows Brewing has an incredibly strong brand. Each of its can and bottle labels features unique and hand-drawn art from Christine Moulson. Christine has been with Strange Fellows since its launch in 2014 and designs labels that zf meant to "celebrate the strange and the extraordinary".

Case in point: Cyclehops. The unique design blends well with the name of the beer. It's both a cyclist, a cyclops and a hoppy beer. Vancouver has a huge biking community and this art taps into that identity. Strange Fellows always includes a story on each label. Curious what story goes along with Cyclehops? You'll need to pick it up at the brewery or at your local liquor store.

Here's what Strange Fellows as to say about the beer itself:

"Brewed with Enigma hops, this single hop IPA has flavours and aromas reminiscent of white grape, ripe red berries and dry earth, Golden Promise malt brings a complexity that stands up to the rich hop character and adds a subtle sweet finish."
