The Beer Loop's top 7 beers we drank in August
Sours, thiols, IPA, and even a spritz make the list
Good morning!
With the shelves filling up with pumpkin ales and families flooding Staples for back-to-school supplies, summer has reached its unofficial conclusion, and that means it's time to look back at the best beers we drank in August 2022.
We normally post this on the website, but we thought you might enjoy it in your inbox
While The Beer Loop spent time in Ontario this month, our list of top beers are all BC beers, which feels right, doesn't it? .
And not to worry, we'll be back on Friday with the full list of this week's new beer releases!

Strange Fellows, Moon Rabbit
This is one of our favourite beers of summer 2022. This saison is clear in colour and highly carbonated, true to the saison style. It sports typical saison aromas in the nose, and the Szechuan pepper hits you n first contact and is beautifully floral. This beer is very enticing, asking for just one more sip. Then another. It is simply well structured and balanced.
Yellow Dog Brewing, Go Get It Ginger Lime Gose
Lime pops out of the glass for a summery aroma. This light sour has a tart flavour enhanced by prominent lime flavours. The ginger is not so obvious, and we are not confident we would have picked it up in a blind taste test, but with some focus, you can find the ginger notes. this goes has nice saltiness and light malt notes for an enjoyable heat wave sipper.
Strathcona Beer Company, Strath Blanche
This Blanche, made with coriander, chamomile, orange peels and almonds has a very distinct and nostalgic nose. We had a hard time pinning down why it felt so familiar. Cherry cola meets cream soda? Makes no sense when you look at the ingredients, but it was enticing nonetheless. Sweet citrus flavours are underpinned by citrus-derived bitterness. And it has a marzipan quality to the after taste. A truly fascinating beer and one we would love to see become a flagship at Strathcona Brewing.
Field House Brewing Co. House Lager
This lager pours with an exceptionally long-lasting head. Well carbonated with a beautiful clear light gold colour. Old world hop aromas illuminate the nose. Light sweet malt in the mouth hints at background bitterness , but the light malt is the star of the show. Just exceptional. So good, that this became our Beer of Summer 2022, as it is fit for any summer occasion.
Another Beer Company + Dageraad, Float on Sour White IPA
This is not a beer style we come across too often. This sour white IPA pours a hazy light straw colour and has aromatic expressions of fresh hop. Bright citrus flavours on first contact, with a restrained bitterness and tartness. Makes for an easy drinking sour, let alone an IPA.
Container Brewing, Far From Home
This Hazy IPA features juicy fruit-forward New Zealand hops Rakau and Motueka. It was also fermented using a theorized yeast strain. (Not sure what we mean by that? Scroll down to the Beer School section here). We found it to be beautifully hazy with pineapple and tropical fruit aromas. A silky mouth feel and lots of clean tropical flavours made way for a clean aftertaste. Bright and tropical with surprisingly clean notes and some restraint makes this sessional, even at 6.5%.
Steel & Oak Brewing Co, Easy Grapefruit
The brewers had to painstakingly peel caseloads of grapefruit to make this beer spritz. It was worth it, pouring a very light pale straw colour and brilliant clarity. As you would expect, grapefruit dominates the nose and flavours without being too bitter. The flavour mellows out quickly for a dry and refreshing finish. Combined with the light ABV, it's a great summer sipper.
