Kickoff the World Cup with these new beers

17 new beers and a lot of imperial stouts

Happy Friday!

And just like that, it's already Grey Cup weekend! 🏈 It's Toronto vs. Winnipeg, with the show kicking off at 3pm. I'm thinking a light American lager is perfect for this kind of game, and I would normally turn to North Point's Lite Lager for such an occasion. The problem is, I'll be at the airport lounge in Toronto...I'm guessing my options won't be so great...

The World Cup also kicks off this weekend, and if you're looking to watch the games with beers in hand, scroll down for options. Allez Les Rouges! 🇨🇦⚽️

As we get closer to the holiday season, we're starting to see a big increase in new imperial stouts. This week's release list is full of them, and they were all aged in barrels.

Did you know, for every person you refer to The Beer Loop, you get an entry into our monthly beer giveaway? That's right, free beer, just for getting friends to sign up. Scroll down to the bottom to see how many referrals you have and what your next reward level is.

FEATURED NEW BEER RELEASES

Doubly Tart

Luppolo Brewing's Tart Wild Ale Series highlights locally-grown ingredients, with each beer in the series made once a year to reflect the changing seasons. Each beer in the series uses the same base beer recipe, fermented with the brewery's house Brett and Facto culture, and then refermented with fresh picked, ripe fruit. The two newest beers in the series are now available.

The first is made with Fraser Valley quince to yield "complex flavours and aromas of apple, pineapple, pear and white pepper.”

The second is made with Lilooet plums, bringing out "aromas of ripe plum, red berry, and subtle funk leading to flavours of cherry, plum and lemon with moderate acidity."

  • Available: On tap, and in cans, only at the brewery.

Egg Noggin'

The holiday beers are starting to hit the shelves, and this one looks unconventional. Moody Ales used wheat and oat malts to create a pillowy mouthfeel "as freshly fallen snow." Being an eggnog beer, it was sweetened with lactose and vanilla and spiced with nutmeg. It promises "sophisticated notes of dark rum."

  • Available: On tap and in cans at the brewery and select liquor stores.

Where has the Rum Gone?

Backcountry confesses that this release is either madness or brilliance. The imperial stout was aged on single blended rum barrels for a year to bring out "subtle cherry, raisins, vanilla, and baking spices" that are balanced with "rich dark chocolate flavours." Now that sounds intense!

  • Available: In single cans at the brewery and shipping out in a limited supply

NEWS

Where to watch the World Cup

The biggest sporting event of the season kicks off Sunday and will consume our attention for the next month with Canada making it to the big leagues. The time difference between Qatar and Vancouver isn't so great, but has there ever been a better excuse to enjoy a delicious craft beer at 11am? I think not.

If you're looking to keep things simple, you'll need a TSN streaming package to watch at home. Get your favourite local craft beer and you're set to go.

If you're looking to get out, here's a list of five great places to watch the game in Vancouver. Or this list of twelve places to watch. The lists include the Hollywood Theatre, Mahoney's Tavern, and The Butcher & Bullock Public House.

Of course, if you want to watch the game at a brewery and are fortunate enough to call Penticton home, Neighbourhood Brewing will be open for all World Cup games. If you're in North Van, North Point has you covered. If you're in Vancouver, Brewhall will have all three Canada group stage games on the screen with big sound. You're encouraged to book a table in advance. Langley? Head on over to Brookswood.

Or, call up your favourite local. B.C bars and restaurants can stay open longer so you can watch late-night or super-early morning games. Liquor service hours won't change though, so pour that IPA into a Yeti mug.

GAME TIME

Last week's game featured a blurred out can and we asked you to guess which BC Beer Award winner you were staring at. The answer: Moody Ales' West Coast IPA. Congrats to Dan, Matthew Stewart, and Tim Doling for guessing correctly.

This week, we go bring you a fresh Wordle. In fact, its the freshest type of IPA you can get.
