Here are 19 new BC beers released in BC this week

Gummy bears, creamsicle, and nitro round out this week's new BC beer releases

Good morning!

Joseph is off attending a brewery workshop in Portland. Let's just say I'm a little jealous. That means you're stuck with me this week.

I'm currently travelling in Ontario and I have to say, congrats to everyone in BC, because it's clear we're still number one for Canadian craft beer.

A big congrats to Matthew, Dan, Anastasia, Sam Ellis and Marc who all correctly guessed the location of our BreweryGuesser location on Friday. The brewery featured was Strange Fellows.

Today we've got some passionfruit and gummy bear beer releases, how beer is soured and an update on the Langford Beer Festival.

Sunshine, passionfruit and lime

Steel and Oak has a new beer out just in time for the good weather. Chasing the Sun is the perfect summer beer, brewed with passionfruit and lime purees. It's described by Steek and Oak as a "refreshing, tropical forward beer with a firm tartness, and delightfully zesty finish".

Yes, it's gummy bears

Sweet and sour notes balance the new Gummy Sour, Raspberry Tangerine from Steamworks Brewing. An ode to the nostalgic 5-cent candy aisle that only millennials will understand, the refreshingly sour beer is only 4.5% and is the perfect beer to enjoy at the patio.

Sorbet nitro

I love sorbet ice cream so this beer really speaks to me. Copper Brewing has a new Lemon Sorbet Nitro Wheat Ale Creamy. Aged in bourbon barrels from Okanagan Spirits, it's got a fresh lemon taste with a creamy finish from the nitro.

NEW BEER RELEASE

Creamy peach

Farmhouse Brewing has a new tart ale called Peach Creamsicle Tart Ale. Combining BC peaches, lemon and lactose sugar, this sweet, tart beer will have you craving those frozen treats. But no matter what the photo shows, we recommend eating both separately.

LEARN SOMETHING NEW

How is beer soured?

With so many breweries releasing many interesting sours, we thought it would be a good time to talk about souring methods!

What makes a sour different? It's all in the bacteria. When a brewer is making beer they typically want to inoculate it with yeast and hope the yeast will pick up fermentation before any other bacteria beat it to the punch. But with a sour, they deliberately add bacteria to help the beer turn sour. The bacterias of choice?

  • The first is lactobacillus - yes the same bacteria that makes yogurt taste slightly sour.

  • The second is pediococcus, a bacteria in the same family of lactobacillus that can also create diacetyl, a compound that has a buttery taste.

  • The third is a domesticated wild yeast, brettanomyces, which doesn't sour the beer but adds layers of funky notes like kay, barnyard, and earthiness, among others.

SOMETHING FUN

Estonia's Koduõlu

Red roofed town

Koduõlu is a signature national beer style from Estonia. It's a farmhouse-ale style beer, hazy, usually opaque and pale yellow.

  • "It has little carbonation, like every other traditional farmhouse ale. It tends to be sweetish, full-bodied, and juicy, with a fairly full mouthfeel, finishing with faintly bitter juniper notes. Above it all floats the signature green, straw-like, umami raw-ale flavors, as does the strong banana-like aroma from the baking yeast the brewers typically us". [Beer and Brewing]
