16 new beers released in BC this week

Pumpkin, bread crust (no, seriously), saisons and sour candy make the rounds this week

Happy Tuesday!

I'd like to thank Ridge Brewing for this memorable quote - "Life's too short to drink crappy beer." We couldn't agree more!

So speaking of good beer, we've got some fun new releases this week. Also a story on why tall cans are everywhere and one brewery in North Vancouver that's closing.

FEATURED NEW BEER RELEASES

Itching for an Inge

Dageraad has a new witbier coming out this Thursday. Called Inge, the description is truly delicious: "Barley, buckwheat, rye and oats help create a luxuriously creamy weave on top of which we’ve placed a dash of bright lemon peel and the comforting floral notes of chamomile."

Sounds like the perfect beer as we get closer to fall.

  • Available: On tap this Thursday and in their online store.

  • Location: 3191 Thunderbird Crescent #114, Burnaby | Map

Double IPA Bombs Away

This limited release from 33 Acres is the bomb. Well, actually it's a Double IPA, but it's an easy mistake given the can design. Unlike bombs which explode, this has a smooth malt base. Like a bomb, it's punchy according to the brewery. Probably something to do with the 7.8% ABV.

  • Available: Online, tasting room and some stockists.

  • Location: 15 W 8th Ave, Vancouver | Map

Bread Crust Brew

Don't let the title fool you, this beer sounds delicious. Persephone Brewery's Oktoberfest Lager is a German-style amber lager and according to them is one of their most anticipated beers of the year. It's got hints of bread crust, toffee and spice. Yum.

  • Available: At the brewery to start, then across the province later.

  • Location: 1053 Stewart Rd., Gibsons | Map

Imperial Pumpkin Eater

Pumpkins? Check. 8.0% ABV? Check. Nutmeg? Yup. If you love the pumpkin season, Howe Sound has a beer for you - an imperial amber ale called Pumpkin Eater. With hints of pumpkin, nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger and cloves, you can forget all about your Starbucks pumpkin spice lattes.

  • Availability: At the brewery or email them directly - [email protected]

  • Location: 37801 Cleveland Ave, Squamish | Map

Pixie Dust

The beer sounds good but the can is unforgettable. Pixie Dust Double Dry Hopped Cryo IPA (try saying that fast!) from Brewhall will have you saving your beer cans like you did in college. Or was I the only one that did that?

Cryo Pop has juicy peach, ripe pineapple and fresh grapefruit aromas. It's a reminder that summer isn't over yet.

  • Available: Limited quantities at their brewery.

  • Location: 97 E 2nd Ave, Vancouver | Map

MORE BEER RELEASES

It's a long list. But that's a good thing.

  • Longwood Brewery has a Belgian-style saison that they describe as "not your grandma's pumpkin pie"

  • No pulp isn't just for orange juice. Beere Brewing Co has a west coast-ish IPA called No Pulp they say is extremely "dank".

  • Peach Creamsicle from Farmhouse Brewing sounds like a tasty dessert. Instead, it's their new tart ale.

  • Hertz Hazy Lager from Beacon Brewing is definitely better than Hertz the car company.

  • Luppolo's new lager from their lager series is a German-style Helles Lager. They say it's a "beer for beer lovers". You be the judge!

  • Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Hazy IPA from Coast Mountain Beer will have you singing that song over and over again.

  • Pucker up for Field House Brewing's new Mango Plum Vanilla Sour. They also have a new Cyro Pop Mosaic DIPA to try.

  • House of Funk teamed up with Rewind to create a new farmhouse ale collab. It's available this weekend only.

  • You'll be seeing green with this new beer. Ocean Dip Sour Candy Ale from Land and Sea Brewing is reminiscent of fun dip, that sugary candy we ate as kids.

  • Strange Fellows has two new sour beers - a Pineapple and Raspberry Berliner Weisse. They also released the Blanca Hallertau Blanc Saison.

  • Undertow West Coast DIPA is Steel and Oak's newest beer and goes down nice and easy. They also have a new Gose.

What Does Citra Smell and Taste Like?

A fellow home-brewer once half-jokingly said he had a simple cheat code for winning brewing competitions: just use Citra hops, one of the most coveted high-impact American hops.

I was reminded of this when I recently enjoyed a beer made with Citra hops. In my tasting notes, I noted that it has “that classic” Citra taste we all know and love.

What is that classic Citra taste?

As the name suggests, Citra has an intense citusy profile: grapefruit, lime, and tropical fruit are nearly guaranteed to shine in the beer, if used as an aroma hop.

How do brewers extract this taste?

To get these flavours to shine, brewers need to add hops near the end of the boiling process. If Citra is used too early in the boil, it will impart a harsh bitterness that is mostly considered undesirable.

What’s a great sample of a BC Beer brewed with Citra hops?

To get a true taste of this incredible hop, we recommend a beer that has been exclusively dry-hopped with Citra. Dat Juice Citra Pale Ale from Twin Sails fits the bill. One sip of this beer and you’ll know exactly what “that classic” Citra taste is.
